‘Kin’ Starring Jack Reynor & James Franco Lands Big Deal With Lionsgate

The sci-fi action thriller Kin, that will star Jack Reynor, James Franco, Zoe Kravitz, and Dennis Quaid has found distributor. On August 30th, it was revealed that Kin would be a pre-buy deal and would attract a lot of bidders. After a lengthy auction, Lionsgate came out the winner and will distribute the film. This marks the second largest pre-buy deal at Toronto, similar to the deal Focus Features got for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Untitled Daniel Day-Lewis drama. It came together so quickly that WME Global canceled a presentation scheduled at Thomson Hall once the bidding hit the wire. WME Global and Good Universe closed the deal.

Financed by No Trace Camping, the company that brought us the Oscar stand-out RoomKin is in pre-production to shoot in Toronto and will be directed by Jonathan and Josh Baker. The pic is based off the Baker’s original 2014 short Bag Man. Written by Daniel Casey, the film will be produced by Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen along with Jeff Arkuss, David Gross, and Jesse Shapira. No Trace Camping is busy while at Toronto, they also have Goon: Ther Last Enforcers, the Jay Baruchel directed follow-up to the indie hit Goon, starring Seann William Scott.

The original short premiered at the 2015 SXSW Festival and Kin will take the original concept and expand it further. Revolving around the recently released ex-con (Reynor) and his adopted younger brother they are forced to go on the run. The two are being pursued by a vindictive criminal (Franco), the feds, and a slew of otherworldly soldiers. Their only protection is a mysterious weapon that they have found. Quaid will play the father of the brothers and Kravitz will appear as a young woman who decides to join them.

Keep an eye out for Kin as it is ready to go and has a scheduled start date for October 24th.
