Kiersey Clemons, most popular for her roles in Dope and Hearts Beat Loud, will reportedly return as Iris West in The Flash, according to the Hollywood Reporter. This is somewhat a return as Clemons was in Zack Snyder’s original Justice League as Iris West, but was cut following Joss Whedon’s takeover of the project.
Iris West is the foremost romantic partner of Barry Allen’s Flash in much of DC Comics, TV, and film lore. She is also typically the sister of Wally West, more or less the second most popular Flash behind Barry. Iris West has been a hero in her own right in some iterations as Kid Flash. While The Flash has been in production hell for the last decade, it would seem that this film is finally getting underway.
After bouncing around all sorts of directors from Dope’s Rick Famuyiwa to Game Night‘s John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the movie will now be helmed by It director Andy Muschietti. With these castings and a stable director, The Flash will hit its 2022 release date.
In addition to the director debacle, the story of the film has been ever changing for years. It was once a Cyborg and Flash movie, then a Flashpoint movie that would bring back Jeffery Dean Morgan’s Thomas Wayne, but now it would seem that it will combine a few storylines and certainly deal with a DC multiverse.
The cast aside from Clemons will be Ezra Miller as the titular superhero, Ben Affleck returning as Batman, Sasha Calle debuting as Supergirl, and Michael Keaton reprising his version of Batman.
This is not the best or simplest way to go about introducing the world of the Flash to the big screen, but since Warner Bros. has been aiming to increase the quality of their projects at DC, this might be a unique vision of the character with a purpose instead of an attempt to emulate the MCU. To date, Ezra Miller’s Flash has only been in three DC films including a significant supporting role in Justice League, and then two cameos in BvS and Suicide Squad.
It will certainly be interesting to finally see Barry Allen’s world for more than a few minutes. Miller was announced as the character all the way back in 2014, and while his film kept getting delayed, it is exciting to see this project come together.
Before the Flash hits theaters on November 4, 2022, Kiersey Clemons and Ezra Miller can be seen as Iris West and Barry Allen, respectively, on March 18, 2021 in Zack Snyder’s Justice League in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.
