Kevin Spacey recently opened up about the sexual harassment allegations made against him during an interview with Piers Morgan during the latter’s show Piers Morgan Uncensored. Spacey admitted that he had gotten “too handsy” with other people in the past, but he continued to deny serious allegations.
When Spacey told Morgan that he wanted to start taking accountability for his bad behavior, he clarified that he had been “pushing the boundaries… being too handsy, touching someone sexually” without recognizing how it made the other person uncomfortable. The actor denied groping or acting roughly with those he had allegedly harassed, but he admitted that he had been gentle with others whenever he made a pass. “You’re making a pass at someone, you don’t want to be aggressive, you want to be gentle,” he explained.
Even so, Spacey claims to recognize how these approaches would have traumatized many young actors into staying silent for so long. He chalked his behavior up to “bouts with arrogance” and his ego. Because of this, Spacey vowed to Morgan that he would now work “to prove that [he is] a man of good character” instead of just a great actor.
The actor had found himself at the center of many serious sexual harassment allegations against young actors, including a 2016 incident where he was accused of allegedly groping a man in a Nantucket bar. While Spacey was found not guilty of several counts of sexual offenses in a London trial, he had to deal with the aftermath of these accusations, specifically how they affected his career and livelihood.
In the Morgan interview, Spacey confessed that he was forced to sell his house to cover his expensive legal bills. Additionally, Spacey is working to return to acting after having parted ways with the show House of Cards due to the allegations.
Whether or not these apologies and claims will stand the test of time is up to Spacey as he works to rebuild his reputation.
