Kevin Smith Announces that ‘Mallrats 2’ Script is Done, Confirms Other Details

Well at least one person has had a productive quarantine. Kevin Smith, the director and writer behind Clerks and Dogma, has announced that he’s finished writing the sequel script to his 1995 cult classic, Mallrats.

Mallrats came out almost a quarter century ago and it seemed like getting a sequel was unlikely until a month ago, when Kevin Smith announced he was working on a script during his self isolation. Smith took to Instagram to make the announcement to eager fans, giving his project the new title Twilight of the Mallrats. The script will have a similar story to the original, which followed T.S. (Jeremy London) and his best friend, Brodie (Jason Lee), as they take a trip to the mall after their respective girlfriends break up with them. The original movie saw mixed reviews and was a failure at the box office, grossing just $2 million on a budget of $6 million, but saw second life on DVD.

Smith additionally announced the return of characters Mr. Svenning (Michael Rooker),  Brodie Bruce (originally played by Jason Lee), Rene (Shannen Doherty), T.S. (Jeremy London), Tricia (Renee Humphrey) and LaFours (Sven-Ole Thorson). The director did not confirm whether other original actors would  return, but did hint at a role for cult-icon Bruce Campbell of Evil Dead fame. Smith also confirmed that Jay and Silent Bob-his and Jason Mewes’ staple characters of the View Askewniverse- will cameo as well.

Twilight of the Mallrats is currently without a release date, but is expected to release sometime in 2021.
