Comedian and actor Kevin Hart has been cast in the film adaptation of the popular video game series Borderlands. Hart will be portraying Roland, who is “a skilled ex-soldier-turned-mercenary.”
While not apparent right away, Hart definitely has the muscles for the part, and perhaps the range. It is not clear if his role will be comedic or serious, in fact very little is known about the plot as of now. This will technically be Hart’s second video game adaptation after the Jumanji movies, though those are not an adaptation of a video game franchise, but the original 1995 movie as well as a children’s book.
The film has a lot of other talent attached as well. Two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett has been cast, draft has been written by two-time Emmy winner for Chernobyl Craig Mazin, and the flick is directed by Eli Roth, most known for his horror films and memorable part in Inglourious Basterds.
Borderlands is being produced by Lionsgate and is huge step as they attempt to get in the video game film world. With other studios currently working on sequels to Sonic the Hedgehog and Tomb Raider as well as Metal Gear Solid and Last of Us films, now seems like a solid time to venture into the video game film market. Video game movies have typically gotten poor reviews, but this film certainly has the pieces in place to be something relatively solid. Borderlands as a brand has similar aesthetics to the popular Mad Max flick Fury Road mixed with a Star Wars film. Which on paper seems like a slam dunk, but it has to be done correctly.
