The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Kathryn Bigelow is set to make a return after a five-year hiatus with a Netflix film. In addition to helming Zero Dark Thirty, a film depicting the mission to kill Osama Bin Laden, she was the first woman to win a Best Directing Oscar for The Hurt Locker, which also won Best Picture at the 82nd Academy Awards in 2010. Bigelow’s new project is titled Aurora and is based on David Koepp’s upcoming novel of the same name. Koepp will pen the screenplay and is a prolific screenwriter with credits ranging from Jurassic Park to Spider-Man. HBO Max’s Kimi is his most recently released work.
The novel is summarized as following a divorced mother who, in the wake of a solar storm that disables humanity’s power grids, must protect her child while reconnecting with her estranged, wealthy CEO brother who has an emergency bunker prepared for these situations. Details on how the novel will be adapted to the screen are still unconfirmed, but THR’s insiders allude to the film’s story being a near direct adaptation. Sources also say that the deal came together this past weekend and is eyeing a $100 million+ budget. Netflix had no comment to provide THR. For now, the film will presumably continue in pre-production and further details are sure to emerge down the road.
