Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs), Emma Stone (Irrational Man), and Olivia Colman (The Lobster) are reportedly in talks to join the upcoming film from director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster), The Favourite, according to Deadline.
The film will tell the story of Queen Anne of the House of Stuarts (Colman) in 18th Century England, focusing on her relationship with Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough (Winslet) and Sarah’s distant relative Abigail Masham (Stone) who gains a position at court. The trio compete for influence and political power within the monarchy. Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara (Ashby) wrote the script.
Aside from working with Lanthimos on The Lobster, Colman is best known for her work in the lead role on the TV crime drama Broadchurch. She has also had roles in Locke, Hot Fuzz, and The Iron Lady. Winslet will be seen next in the upcoming Steve Jobs, and has joined John Hillcoat’s (Lawless) upcoming drama Triple Nine. Stone is currently shooting Damien Chazelle’s (Whiplash) La La Land.
Lanthimos’ latest film, The Lobster – which recently got a new trailer – has earned critical praise for the director. Given the film’s success in the festival circuit, it makes sense for development on the director’s next project to be well underway.
Element Pictures and Scarlet Films will produce The Favourite. No release date or production schedule has been announced at this time.
