In the last few weeks, we’ve seen a steady drip-feeding of casting information regarding the sequel to Rian Johnson‘s hit 2019 murder-mystery film, Knives Out, and now, it looks like Kate Hudson is the next big name on the list. Other already-announced cast members include Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista, Janelle Monae, Leslie Odom Jr., Edward Norton, and, of course, Daniel Craig will return as super sleuth Benoit Blanc.
Little is known about the plot to the upcoming sequel other than Johnson will be returning to write and direct the film and produce alongside his partner Ram Bergman. Earlier this year, Netflix acquired the franchise’s second and third installments for over $400 million after the explosive success of the first film, which made over $311 million worldwide on $40 million budget. It’s not clear exactly when we’ll see the new films hit the streamer, but Knives Out 2 is set to begin production in Greece this Summer.
It seems like everything is set in motion for a potentially massive new franchise with Craig solving mysteries amongst a rotating cast of A-listers. Kenneth Brannagh attempted his own similar formula in 2017 with Murder on the Orient Express, new adaptation of Agatha Christie’s classic novel with Brannagh as detective Hercule Poirot. Although the film didn’t receive nearly the same acclaim that Johnson’s did two years later, it managed to be similarly successful, earning over $352 million on a budget of $55 million. The sequel for that film, Death on the Nile, is set to release in 2022 after being originally delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and an FBI investigation into one of the film’s stars, Armie Hammer.
