Karl Urban Says That ‘Dredd’ Was Directed by Alex Garland

Dredd is a great action flick. It may have flopped at the box office, but it offered up The Raid-esque thrills in a gritty comic book setting, and it deserved more love than it got. And according to Karl Urban, that love should be accredited to Alex Garland rather than Pete Travis. Garland, who wrote the screenplay, allegedly directed the film as well, even though Travis is listed as the director of record.

“A huge part of the success of Dredd is in fact due to Alex Garland and what a lot of people don’t realize is that Alex Garland actually directed that movie,” Urban mused in an interview with JoBlo. “I just hope when people think of Alex Garland’s filmography that Dredd is the first film that he made before Ex Machina. You think about it in those terms; it goes Dredd, Ex Machina, Annihilation.”

Well, that punches up Garland’s resume a bit. As far as the possibility of a Dredd sequel goes, the lack of money made by the first film doesn’t bode well. However, as the movie’s status as a cult hit grows, rumblings have emerged regarding a possible TV series that would continue where the film left off.

“My understanding of where they are in the process is that they are in development, and they are writing and developing a sort of 10-episode based television series called Mega-City One,” Urban opined to ComicBook.com. “And I told them, if they write some great material for Dredd, and give him a real purpose and a function, that I would love to come back and be a part of it. So, let’s see what they do.”

Let’s just hope they get all of their ducks in a row when it comes time to choose directors for the proposed series.
