Disney executives are surely bewildered at the lackluster performance of its newest nostalgia bait film Lightyear. The film’s existing IP gave investors hopes that the Toy Story prequel would earn much more than its $51 million North American opening weekend. Whether it was international bans, lack of nostalgic power, or not enough of the Toy Story ensemble, Lightyear did not perform as expected, not reaching close to its $70 million prediction.
On top of this, the monumental release of Jurassic World: Dominion is taking a monstrous bite out of everyone’s slice of the box office. Universal and Amblin Entertainment are calling the sequel at $58 million.
Furthermore, the film’s global tally is $85M, significantly lower than the film’s projected $135M global total. In other news, Top Gun: Maverick is coming in at $44M, down an amazing 15%, for a $466.1M.
In tenth place is the new release of the AI buddy comedy Brian and Charles . It played in 279 locations in 100 markets, it did $198K over 3-days, for a $711 per theater.
