The Fundamentals of Caring starring Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Selena Gomez (Behaving Badly) will premiere on Netflix on June 24th. The film has also had a theatrical run, making it eligible for awards.
TV producer Rob Burnett directed, produced, as well as adapted the screenplay from Jonathan Evison’s novel. The story follows Ben Benjamin (Rudd), who after losing his wife, his family, his home, and his livelihood, enrolls in a night class to learn how to be a caregiver of people with disabilities. His first client Trevor (Craig Roberts, Neighbors) is a tyrannical teenager with muscular dystrophy. They build a close friendship and embark on a road trip to visit Trevor’s ailing father. Their journey is marked by bizarre adventures and deep life lessons. The original feature also stars Jennifer Ehle (Fifty Shades of Grey), Frederick Weller (The Shape of Things) and Megan Ferguson (TV’s The Comedians).
The film debuted in January at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.
