“Not everything is supposed to make you feel comfortable”. These are words spoken by Julia Roberts’ character Alma, a revered college professor, in the first look at Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming thriller After the Hunt from Amazon MGM Studios. After the Hunt‘s first trailer was released this Wednesday, it holds a first look at its principal cast, who find themselves in the midst of a moral scandal set against an educational backdrop. Joining Roberts are Andrew Garfield as Alma’s colleague Hank and Ayo Edibiri as her young student Maggie. Staggered philosophical and generational differences are quickly drawn between the characters within the trailer’s runtime, as things quickly get complicated when a disheveled Maggie poses a serious interpersonal accusation against Hank. Tensions are fired up between the trio as Alma must play both sides to discover the truth before it seeps into her professional life.
After the Hunt will serve as Guadagnino’s tenth feature film, following critical successes such as Call Me By Your Name, Challengers, and Queer. The film was written by Nora Garrett and also features previous Guadagnino collaborators Chloë Sevigny and Michael Stuhlbarg. The psychological drama looks to hone in on themes of accusation, retaliation, the harboring of secrets, and how a scandal like the one posed in the film can affect the minds and actions of those involved. Hank appears to take advantage of the history and trust found in Alma’s character, denying the claim against him, calling it a “fabrication” before lashing out in anger later in the trailer. Maggie, meanwhile, mentions at one point, “The young Black woman can get assaulted, and all these white people figure out a way to make it about themselves.”
After the Hunt will receive a limited engagement on October 10th, followed by a wide release October 17th. Watch the trailer below.
