Two-time Academy Award nominee Jude Law is in talks to star opposite Scarlett Johansson and Jacob Elordi in Scapegoat, the next feature film from writer-director Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar, Beau Is Afraid). A24 is handling distribution, continuing its long-standing collaboration with the filmmaker.
Aster will direct from his own original screenplay and produce alongside longtime producing partner Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg production banner. Narrative specifics remain closely guarded, though industry rumors have floated conflicting loglines ranging from a drama about a surgeon operating on an internet personality to elements of sci-fi romance or a more grounded dramatic turn for the auteur.
The project marks Aster’s immediate follow-up to his contemporary neo-western Eddington. Elordi joined the ensemble in recent weeks, with Law now finalizing a deal to step into a leading role opposite Johansson.
The attachment continues an active period for Law, who starred in Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, earned an Emmy nomination for Netflix’s limited drama Black Rabbit, and portrayed Vladimir Putin in The Wizard of the Kremlin. His upcoming slate includes starring opposite Andrew Garfield as Siegfried Fischbacher in Apple TV+’s limited series Wild Things, as well as a role in Nancy Meyers’ upcoming feature film.
