Jude Law is making moves from The Young Pope to young Dumbledore for the untitled Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel.
Albus Dumbledore, the Headmaster of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter series, was originally portrayed by Richard Harris before his passing after the second film. The role was taken over by Michael Gambon for the remaining five installments of the franchise. Law will be ushering in a new era for the character, and it will be interesting to see if author J.K. Rowling will incorporate Dumbledore’s supposed homosexuality into this version of the HP universe.
Rowling is coming back to adapt the screenplay for the second of five Fantastic Beasts films. Director David Yates will also be back. He had the following to say about Law’s involvement:
[Law is] a phenomenally talented actor whose work I have long admired, and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him. I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.
Returning cast will include Eddie Redmayne, Johnny Depp as the next villain, Katherine Waterston, and many more of the first installment’s actors. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 will hit U.S. theaters on November 16, 2018.
Law will next appear in Sherlock Holmes 3, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and alongside Rooney Mara in Vox Lux.
