“It’s Time We Knew” – Check Out the First Trailer for Kathryn Bigelow’s ‘Detroit’

AnnaPurna Pictures debuted the first trailer for Kathryn Bigelow’s Detriot, a new docudrama exploring one of the biggest citizen uprisings in American history. Bigelow, who won an Oscar for directing the 2009 Best Picture champ The Hurt Locker and most recently helmed Zero Dark Thirty, returns to topical fare, this time taking a look back at an event in time that feels particularly resonant.

The events that triggered the uprising followed a police raid of an unlicensed, after-hours bar, which precipitated what became the 1967 Detriot Riot. As evident in the film’s first trailer, the movie looks to zero in on race and contention between citizens and law enforcement officers with hopefully the same clear-eyed sharpness that Bigelow granted the Iraq War drama The Hurt Locker and the hunt for Osama bin Laden in Zero Dark Thirty.

Check out the first trailer below:

Detroit features a large ensemble cast consisting of many up and coming actors, lead by Star Wars breakout John Boyega. Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker), Tyler James Williams (Dear White People), Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton), Jacob Latimore (Collateral Beauty), Kaitlyn Dever (Short Term 12), Will Poulter (The Revenant), Jack Reynor (Sing Street), Hannah Murray (Game of Thrones), Laz Alonso (Avatar), Jeremy Strong (Selma) and John Krasinski (13 Hours) co-star. Oscar winning writer Marc Boal (The Hurt Locker) penned the screenplay.

Detroit hits theaters on August 4th.
