Since leaving The Daily Show in 2015, Jon Stewart has kept a pretty low profile. An answer to where the famed late night host has gone arrived yesterday: the director’s chair, as Stewart unveiled the trailer of his newest film Irresistible, during yet another crowd-pleasing appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
The political comedy will star Steve Carrell as Gary Zimmer, a political strategist who helps a retired veteran (Chris Cooper) run for mayor in a small, conservative Midwest town. Focus Features, the film’s distributor, posted the official trailer to YouTube last night, affirming that “Jon Stewart is back, and he has something to say.”
The trailer shows Carrell as the Democratic Zimmer attempting to convince the western, conservative friendly Jack Hastings (Cooper), a retired veteran, to run for Mayor of his town in the swing state of Wisconsin. Upon arriving in Wisconsin, he meets Hastings’ daughter (McKenzie Davis) and fails to fit in with his peer group of veterans. A successful start to the campaign is cut short, however, with the arrival of Zimmer’s nemesis Faith (a very blonde Rose Byrne), who works for the Republican National Committee. This sends the duo into overdrive for a race against the Republican mayoral candidate to win the election. Cue pitch perfect political satire.
Irresistible also stars Topher Grace, Will Sasso, Natasha Lyonne, and Debra Messing in supporting roles and is set for a theatrical release on May 29. Catch the trailer below:
