Prolific film producer Jon Landau passed away at the age of 63 on the 5th of July. Born to Ely and Edie Landau in 1960, Landau grew up in New York City. He got his start in the world of film in 1987 when he served as a producer on Ron Casden’s Campus Man. Some other credits of Landau’s include Dick Tracy, Solaris, and Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band- Live In New York City. Landau’s credits even go beyond 2024, as some of his work is on films that are not yet finished and released.
His most fruitful endeavors, however, come from his work with James Cameron. Upon one of their earliest projects together, that being Cameron’s critically acclaimed and box office smash-hit Titanic, Landau won an Oscar alongside Cameron when Titanic won Best Picture at the 70th Academy Awards.
From there, Landau teamed up again with Cameron, when he decided to bring the world of Pandora to theater screens with Avatar. After the success of the first film, Cameron was given the opportunity to bring the story back in four more films, with Landau attached to each of them as a producer.
As Deadline reports, the start of Cameron and Landau working together came with True Lies, which saw the two of them at odds on the film, but the pair were able to work together smoothly later on, thanks to a shared passion for bringing Titanic to the big screen. Landau talked to Deadline specifically about it, during his time on Behind The Lens.
Landau is survived by wife Julie, as well as his two sons, Jamie and Jodie.
