‘Joker’ Surpasses ‘Deadpool’ as Highest Grossing R-Rated Film Worldwide

Joker has easily been the most talked about film over the past month, generating equal levels of hype and controversy from critics. Despite many being skeptical about an R-rated drama based on the character being a financial hit, the DC Comics film has not only become one of Warner Bros’ biggest hits, but has now risen to become the highest grossing R-rated film worldwide. Joker has made about $788.1 million in its worldwide box office and is expected to cross the $800 million dollar mark this weekend.

Now Joker has officially surpassed Deadpool 2’s $783 million gross, making it also the highest grossing R-rated film based on comic book. Joker is such a huge success that Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds, even congratulated the film on his twitter making funny remarks about the other R-rated films it surpassed. Some of the other films Joker surpassed included Stephen King’It, The Matrix movies, Logan, and Passion of the Christ.

Not only did Joker break records in the R-rating department, but it has also surpassed numerous films in the DC Cinematic Universe. This includes Justice League, Suicide Squad, and Man Of Steel’s box office gross, all of which made about $700 million worldwide. Considering how close Joker is to making around $800 million and still within its first month of release, it’s very likely to surpass both Wonder Woman and Batman vs. Superman as well. It definitely makes for a perfect victory for Warner Bros, even if fans certainly did not expect the most iconic DC villain to end up beating out most of their heroes.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
