Two weeks in now and Todd Philips’ Joker has proven to be an overall success. Both financially and critically, this loose comic book adaptation of the most famous Batman villain continues to defy the odds with $543.9 million worldwide currently. As reported by Deadline, the film reeled in $55 million this past weekend, breaking the record for the highest second week box office take in October, previously held by 2013’s Gravity, also distributed by Warner Bros.
For Joaquin Phoenix, Joker will mark his highest grossing film since Gladiator back in 2000, which grossed $460.5 million. Joker also stands as Robert DeNiro’s highest grossing film, beating 2004’s Meet the Fockers which made $516.6 million globally. Lastly, the film will come at second for Todd Philips only behind 2011’s The Hangover Part 2, which sits at $586.7 million worldwide, but that could change with the DC film entering its third week.
Being produced on a budget of $65 million, Joker has crossed the halfway mark of the coveted $1 billion club milestone. Although controversy shrouded the film, Philips and Phoenix decided to let the film speak for itself and the results are solid. Joker is currently in theaters.
