Deadline has reported that a film starring Johnny Depp titled Minamata has been released in theaters this weekend. The film was originally scheduled to release in February of 2021 but was delayed.
Depp and director Andrew Levitas both claim that the delay of the film was due to the legal conflict between Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp is currently suing Heard for defamation.
Minamata stars Depp, best known for his role as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, as journalist Eugene Smith who exposed the chemical company Chisso Corp. in Japan that was responsible for contaminating a large water supply with mercury. Smith was best known as a photographer who took photos of those who were affected by mercury poisoning. The film is based on a true story.
The title of the film comes from the Minamata disease that is caused by consuming mercury-contaminated seafood. The disease affects the brain and central nervous system and was often seen in the children of mothers who consumed mercury-contaminated seafood while pregnant. The disease is directly correlated to environmental harm done by pollution.
Minamata is in theaters nationwide, states including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Boston, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Houston, Seattle, Tampa, Miami, Denver, Cleveland, Orlando, Sacramento, Portland, Raleigh, Charlotte, Knoxville, Austin, Albuquerque, and Cincinnati. Distributor Samuel Goldwyn Films said expansion is to be determined.
