In an interview with The Times UK, film composer John Williams said he would not be ruling “anything out” when creating more film scores. Talking to the Associated Press back in June 2022, Wiliams teased his retirement while working on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, stating it would likely be his last film: “At the moment, I’m working on Indiana Jones 5, which Harrison Ford — who’s quite a bit younger than I am — I think has announced will be his last film. So, I thought: If Harrison can do it, then perhaps I can, also…At this point in life, [composing a film score] is a long commitment to me.”
In January 2023, Williams spoke of long-term collaborator Steven Spielberg, stating he may not retire and would not be opposed to composing for another Spielberg film. Williams and Spielberg have worked on multiple films such as Jaws, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and many other Spielberg classics.
In response to being asked about retirement again by The Times UK, Williams said, “I don’t care much for grand pronunciamentos, statements that are firm and finished and surrounded by closed doors. If I made one without putting it in context then I withdraw it.”
He added to this statement, saying, “If a film came along that I was greatly interested in, with a schedule that I could cope with, then I wouldn’t want to rule anything out…Everything is possible. All is before us. Only our limitations are holding us back. Or, to put it simply: I like to keep an open mind.”
