This week starts off with a Lionsgate misfire with From the World of John Wick: Ballerina underperforming, netting only $25 million for its opening week losing to the juggernaut that is the Lilo & Stitch live action remake. At $32.5 million, Lilo & Stitch stayed number one for the domestic box office.
Despite the softer opening critics and audiences are still responding positively to Ballerina which currently has a A- CinemaScore and a current 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Hopeful predictions push that Ballerina may still see a healthy box office run despite the original optimistic initial predictions setting Ballerina at $30 to $35 million. For a spinoff, Ballerina could have had a much bleaker opening. Ballerina is commanding a mostly male, or 63 percent, audiance according to PostTrak reports showing that the spinoff likely wasn’t able to attract new viewers with its iteration compared to the main title series.
Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning landed in third with $15 million keeping pace with its Memorial day co-debuter for its own third week. Karate Kid Legends though saw a nose dive with less than half seen from its opening week for its second run with only $8.7 million.
Rounding out the top five is Final Destination Bloodlines with $6.5 million for a solid landing after 4 weeks for a grand domestic total of $123.5 million.
The lower five are led by Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme with $6.25 million securing it sixth place. A24’s Bring Her Back lands in seventh with $3.5 million keeping the indie horror in the top ten for its second week.
Eighth place went to notable newcomer Dan Da Dan: Evil Evil, an anime movie comprised of the first 3 episodes of Season 2 for hit series Dan Da Dan showing once more that limited theatrical release of series arcs are hitting a demand just like Demon Slayers’ Mugen Train did before. With $3 million Dan Da Dan dazzled its fans.
With a legendary legacy that may stand unchallenged, Sinners held onto the top ten in ninth place with $2.9 million in its eighth week for a massive total of $272.6 million domestically. Tenth went to Marvel’s Thunderbolts* which brought in an additional $2.5 million in its sixth week.
