Comedian and actor John Mulaney has offered new insight into his upcoming Get Smart feature reboot, in which he is in discussions to star for Warner Bros. Speaking on the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of Amazon MGM Studios’ biopic Madden, Mulaney explained what attracted him to the satirical spy franchise originally conceived in the 1960s by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry.
“It’s a world of espionage with a super, super confident, not always informed person. That’s my favorite type of person to play,” Mulaney told reporters. “I’ve gone very far in life sounding like I know what I’m talking about but having absolutely no idea what I’m saying. And I think that works perfectly for espionage.”
Currently in early development at Warner Bros., the reboot is being penned by screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith (Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, The LEGO Batman Movie). Longtime producers Charles Roven and Andrew Lazar are attached to produce the project. The property previously transitioned from Don Adams’ classic 1965 television run to the big screen in Peter Segal’s 2008 feature starring Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, and Dwayne Johnson, which earned $230 million at the global box office.
Ahead of stepping into the Maxwell Smart role, Mulaney appears on screen as Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins in David O. Russell’s sports biopic Madden, starring opposite Nicolas Cage as football icon John Madden and Christian Bale as Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis. The film begins a limited theatrical run ahead of its November 18, 2026, streaming debut on Prime Video.
