The next installment of the Fast and Furious franchise is getting even more star power, with yet another former wrestler turned actor joining the cast. According to Deadline, WWE icon John Cena will have a starring role in the upcoming Fast and Furious 9. Not much is known about Cena’s character at the moment, nor how the film’s plot will tie into the events of The Fate of the Furious. It is known that Fast and Furious 9 will be directed by Justin Lin, who has directed many other Fast and Furious movies including Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast Five, and Fast and Furious 6. Fast and Furious 9 is being written by Dan Casey, and the movie will be released in May of 2020.
Unfortunately, while Cena will be appearing in Fast and Furious 9, the movie will be missing Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson, who joined the cast in Fast Five. This is likely due to the well-known public feud between Johnson and Vin Diesel, which forced Fate of the Furious to shoot interactions between their characters at a distance or with body doubles. Nevertheless, Johnson will be reprising his role as Luke Hobbes in the upcoming Fast and Furious spinoff movie Hobbs and Shaw alongside co-star Jason Statham and franchise newcomer Idris Elba.
