The Independent, a political thriller starring Brian Cox (Succession) and Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), stars Oscar winner Kathy Bates (American Horror Story) and WWE star John Cena (F9: The Fast Saga, The Suicide Squad). The Hollywood Reporter reported about the making of the political thriller earlier this month.
Emmy-nominated director Amy Rice (HBO’s By The People: The Election of Barack Obama) will direct the political thriller. Rice is currently working on an upcoming doc Broadway Rising. Rice will be directing the film from a top-ranked Black List script written by Evan Parter, who is presently writing the untitled John Dean project for Amazon starring Chris Pine.
The Independent follows an idealistic young journalist (Turner-Smith) who hooks up with her idol (Cox) to discover a plot that puts the destiny of the election, and the country, in their hands in the last weeks of the most significant presidential election in history.
Bates will portray the first female presidential contender, while Cena will play an independent presidential candidate.
The film is produced and distributed internationally by The Exchange.
“We’re incredibly excited to partner with Kathy Bates and John Cena on The Independent. Kathy’s exceptional acting skills, paired with Cena’s global appeal and ability to transform on-screen, make them incredible additions to this film. We couldn’t be happier that they’ve signed on,” said Brian O’Shea of The Exchange.
The Independent is set to begin filming in NYC later this year in Nov.
