These days movie remakes are pretty commonplace, so it probably is not shocking to hear that there have been talks about remaking Big Trouble in Little China. It has been more than 30 years since the original John Carpenter-directed Big Trouble in Little China was released, and since then the film has earned a cult following amongst film fans.
Right now there have not been any major developments in the project other than getting Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson attached to star in the remake. It also appears that movie is less of remake and more of a sequel. Whatever the movie is it looks like Carpenter will not be involved in this project, and he does not seem to approve of it either. According to an article over at Cinema Blend Carpenter is not happy about the prospects of a new Big Trouble in Little China, fearing that the studio is just trying to make another Rock movie without any consideration for the source material.
“They want a movie with Dwayne Johnson. That’s what they want. So they just picked that title. They don’t give a shit about me and my movie. That movie wasn’t a success,” Carpenter told CinemaBlend.
The original featured Kurt Russell as a trucker who rescues his friend’s fiance from a supernatural force under the streets of China Town. With Johnson’s constant packed schedule, hopefully the star will work to ensure that the new film continues the story rather than cashes in on a built in fanbase.
