Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The A-Team) is set to direct the American remake of the 2011 Indonesian martial arts film The Raid: Redemption, originally directed by Welsh director Gareth Evans. Carnahan takes the place of Patrick Hughes, who stepped away from the project in 2015.
The Raid:Redemption followed a S.W.A.T. team after they become trapped in a old, run-down apartment building by a mobster and his team of thugs. On Twitter, Carnahan made the clarification that his film will not be a complete remake of the 2011 film, saying “It’s not a remake. It’s a reimagining of the same scenario.”
Frank Gillo is the one actor confirmed to star. Taylor Kitsch was originally attached, but left after the film was caught in development.
At one point, when Patrick Hughes was still signed on to direct, brothers Liam and Chris Hemsworth were being circled for the lead roles.
Carnahan currently has a few other projects in the works. He has written the screenplay for Death Wish, which will star Bruce Willis, and will direct/write Bad Boys for Life starring Will Smith.
