Paramount and J.J. Abrams are working together once again on film that not a lot of people saw coming from an American studio. Commonly, when a Japanese animated film or television show has become financially and critically successful, a live-action film is almost always realized; yet Japan is typically the company that works on the re-imagining. Recently, however, the United States have begun to tackle these live-action remakes, with two coming out this year to fairly mediocre reviews, including Netflix’s Death Note and Paramount’s Ghost in the Shell.
Abrams is working on the hugely successful Your Name, which became the highest grossing domestic animated film in Japan last year. We hope Abrams will be able to build a team that can do the film justice; his dedicated handling of the Star Wars franchise thus far points toward a positive outcome. Your Name focuses on the story of two young teenagers named Mitsuha and Taki, who live two completely different lives that become intertwined with one another when they begin to body switch out of nowhere, creating a special but complicated bond between the two.
Currently, Eric Heisserer (Arrival, Lights Out) has been chosen to write the scripts, and Bad Robot, Abrams’s production company, will be producing. Abrams is currently working on other projects, like Star Wars Episode IX, and is looking for a director for the film. We hope his selection is strong and understands the source material well enough to provide us with a solid live-action remake.
