Universal and Blumhouse Pictures have unveiled the first look and details surrounding The Exorcist: Martyrs. Serving as new take on the horror IP from master of dread Mike Flanagan (Prime Video’s Carrie series, Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House), Martyrs stars Scarlett Johansson, Jacobi Jupe, John Leguizamo, Chiwetel Ejiogor, Sasha Calle, Diane Lane, and Laurence Fishburne. Filming spanned between March and June of this year, but plot details had been kept under covers.
The full trailer for The Exorcist: Martyrs is slated to premiere at this Friday’s New York Comic Con, but a quick teaser and a few stills from the film had been released beforehand. The images were shared exclusively to Esquire, where director Mike Flanagan also shared details surrounding the central characters.
“[Johansson’s character Detective Julie Miller is] a homicide detective with the NYPD and a single mother of a young boy named Max, who’s just turned 12 years old. Because being a homicide detective is one of those jobs that pulls you completely out of your life when you’re on call, you might not come home for days while you’re chasing a case. A lot of the slack is picked up by her own mother, Mary,” Flanagan stated.
“John Leguizamo plays a serial killer who Scarlett apprehends very early in the story, and she’s there to witness his execution, which doesn’t go exactly as they expect it to…” He finished.
In the teaser, Johansson can be seen on investigation, navigating fearfully through the darkness. Chiwetel Eijofor is shown as his priest character Father William, and Leguizamo is seen in the process of the lethal injection of his serial killer character “Father Sunday”.
The Exorcist: Martyrs will possess theaters beginning March 12, 2027. Watch the teaser below.
