According to Deadline, six-time Golden Globe nominee Jim Carrey (Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura, Dark Crimes) has been cast as the villainous Dr. Robotnik in Paramount’s live action/CGI feature film, which is based on the classic SEGA video game Sonic the Hedgehog that debuted in the early 1990s. Sonic is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog whose greatest ability is incredible speed; he’s even capable of reaching the speed of sound. James Marsden (Shock and Awe, Westworld) and Tika Sumpter (Ride Along franchise) co-star in the movie.
Paramount took Sonic over from Sony, and it’s the first film made as part of the first-look deal between Paramount and Original Films. Jeff Fowler, Oscar-nominated for his 2005 short film Gopher Broke, makes his feature film directorial debut from a screenplay by Patrick Casey, Josh Miller, and Oren Uziel. Deadpool director Tim Miller and Toby Ascher are executive producing. While the plot is still under wraps, Deadline intimates that it will follow a buddy-cop formula, while juvenile delinquent Sonic does all he can to stop Robotnik’s plan of world domination.
Carrey, a Canadian-American actor, is best known for his slapstick over-the-top comedic turns, but has also been critically lauded for dramatic performances in films such as The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. On the big screen, he last starred in Dark Crimes. Next up, he will be starring in and exec-producing Showtime’s Kidding, which premieres in September.
Sonic the Hedgehog is scheduled to bow in theaters on November 15, 2019.
