Jennifer Lawrence Pulling out of Elizabeth Holmes’ Biopic ‘Bad Blood’

Jennifer Lawrence will no longer act in Adam McKay’s upcoming project Bad Blood. The Silver Linings Playbook actress was set to play Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in a drama about her life. Lawrence told Kyle Buchanan of The New York Times – who broke the story on Twitter- that Amanda Seyfried’s performance as Holmes was the reason she’s pulling out. After seeing the show, Lawrence said “I thought she was terrific. I was like, ‘Yeah, we don’t need to redo that.’ She did it.'”

Seyfried won an Emmy for her critically acclaimed portrayal in the Hulu limited series The Dropout. The miniseries follows the disgraced entrepreneur as she drops out of Stanford at 19 to start a biotech company.

The startup, Theranos, claimed to have invented a revolutionary blood testing machine called the Edison that could painlessly scan for hundreds of diseases in just a few minutes. Theranos quickly ballooned to a $9 billion valuation, making Holmes the youngest self-made female billionaire in the world. Then news broke that Holmes had misled investors and the Edison, in fact, could not perform any of the tests it claimed it could. Holmes was found guilty on four counts of fraud in 2022 and faces up to 20 years of prison.

Apple Studios picked up Bad Blood in December 2021 and are producing the film along with Legendary Pictures. Lawrence was also set to produce. McKay wrote the script based on John Carreyrou’s 2018 book Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup. Lawrence and McKay have been attached to the project since 2016. It is yet to be announces whether Lawrence will stay on as a producer.
