Jennifer Lawrence Joins Adam McKay’s Theranos Medical Drama

Oscar winning actress Jennifer Lawrence (Joy) has signed on to Adam McKay‘s latest scandal bio centered on the controversy surrounding the medical company Theranos and its 32-year-old founder Elizabeth Holmes, according to Deadline.

Theranos, established in 2003, was once a highly regarded company specializing in blood testing and had an estimated $9 billion valuation by Silicon Valley investors within recent years. The company’s revolutionary medical research claimed to have discovered a method of blood testing using only a pinprick rather than the standard practice of drawing blood by injection. Holmes herself had an estimated net-worth of $4.5 billion before the company recently faced reports that their blood testing methods produce inaccurate results. Theranos has been hard at work refuting the claims, but the company’s reputation has plummeted as a result, bringing its worth down to $800 million based on an updated estimate from Forbes.

McKay, well known for being the producing partner of Will Ferrell at Dirty Sanchez Productions, recently made waves directing the stock market expose drama The Big Short. The filmmaker was praised by audiences and critics for making the otherwise dry material of the stock market crash accessible and entertaining to the general population. McKay, therefore, will likely make the perfect marriage for director and subject material when he takes on the depths of the medical research world. With an engaging actress like Lawrence on board as well, the film has every chance of picking up steam.

For Lawrence, packing the Theranos drama into her schedule will likely be an added challenge. Coming up, she will be starting production on the Darren Aronofsky project Day 6 with Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina) as well as on Marita which will see her starring as one of Fidel Castro’s real life lovers and conspirators in his assassination plot. She also has Steven Spielberg‘s war photographer drama It’s What I Do in the pipeline which has been in development for quite some time now, and according to rumors, she may be eyeing role in the female Ocean’s Eleven reboot. The next time we see her in theaters, however, will be alongside Chris Pratt in Passengers, set to bow on December 21 of this year.
