Jamie Lee Curtis, known by horror fans as the original scream queen, made her film debut in John Carpenter’s Halloween back in 1978. Portraying protagonist Laurie Strode, Curtis would later reprise her role in the sequel three years later and go on to become a household Hollywood name. Despite helping to kickstart the slasher genre, however, Curtis made it known she doesn’t approve of such films being shown to kids.
Curtis was recently on a podcast when the topic of children watching her Halloween movies was brought into discussion. Curtis replied with the following statement: “I’m not demeaning children or saying they can’t handle (violence), but it’s the truth… When I go out to talk about Halloween, even when I was doing book tours for books for children, I would have people come…They will stand there with their five-year-old kid, and say to me, ‘My Bobby loves Halloween, Don’t you Bobby?’… and I look at them and I have the meanest, meanest JLC are-you-out-of-your-fucking-mind look of you are the worst human being on the planet that you would show your child Halloween. I have kind of a strong opinion, as you can tell, about when is correct and incorrect to expose a child to that stuff.”
It comes at a shock for many that, given Curtis’ contribution to the horror genre, she would be opposed to it. There is a growing sense that “scary” movies are becoming more and more difficult to make now that individuals are less afraid. Nevertheless Jamie Lee stuck to her stance, though many teens and young childrenr will undoubtedly continue to watch future horror films to come.
