James Gunn has reportedly cut a scene from his upcoming Superman film due to negative reactions during test screenings, according to the film’s actors, as reported by Screen Rant.

In an interview with Jake’s Takes on YouTube, cast members Sara Sampaio and María Gabriela de Faría, who played Eve Teschmacher, a henchwoman of main bad guy Lex Luthor, and Angela Spica, a super-powered being named The Engineer, discussed making the movie, including “working” with the superhero’s canine co-star Krypto.

When the interviewer mentioned that there was a scene where The Engineer “wasn’t so nice” to Krypto, the actresses hinted that there had been an even worse scene involving Ultraman, an evil clone of Superman, with Sampaio saying,

“Well, they cut Ultraman punching Krypto. Because, apparently, it did really bad in the test screening.”

Gabriela de Faria added,

“It’s not okay. You can’t punch a dog…I did not punch the dog. The dog attacked me first.”

Gunn previously discussed how his inspiration for the depiction of the canine sidekick was based on his own adopted dog, Ozu, saying,

“…He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?”

While having a stand-in dog for lighting purposes on set, the version of Krypto seen onscreen is a fully CGI creation.

Krypto will appear alongside David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Sampaio, Gabriela de Faria, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Isabela Merced, and Anthony Carrigan. Superman is now out in theaters.
