Under the Warner Bros label, James Gunn and Peter Safran served as the heads of DC studios, while Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy acted as the co CEOs and chairman of the overall film division. With Paramount Skydance’s takeover of the studio imminent, Gunn and Safran will remain on while De Luca and Abdy are out.
DC Studios is no doubt a prime acquisition for Paramount under the WB banner, giving the studio a competitor against Disney’s Marvel Studios, despite the turmoil DC has gone through in recent years. Nearly 2 decades ago, Paramount nearly acquired Marvel Studios, before Marvel was ultimately obtained by Disney in 2009 for $4 billion. It is reported that Gunn and Safran recently met with Skydance co-CEO David Ellison to discuss the pairs future. Reporting today illustrates a new chain of command for the now merging film divisions of Warner Bros and Paramount, with all units now set to report directly to Paramount Picture co-chairs Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein.
The upcoming film projects in the DCU includes Clayface, set for release on October 23, Gunn’s Superman sequel Man Of Tomorrow, releasing July 9 of 2027, and Matt Reeves’ Elseworlds The Batman: Part 2, set for release on February 18, 2028. On HBO Max, new series Lanterns has quickly become a massive hit for the streamer, with the pilot accumulating 20 million viewers since its premiere on August 16. Safran and Gunn were brought in to reset the DCU in October 2022, with CEO David Zaslav hoping to mimic the success of the MCU.
The $111 billion merger will go through on October 6. Stay with us at MXDWN for any future updates on the merger.
