While Avatar: Fire and Ash continues to excel at the box office, already reaching $500 million worldwide, James Cameron has been staying proactive with his plans for the following two films in the franchise. In recent discussion with Entertainment Weekly, Cameron spoke about his backup plans for the 4th and 5th installments in the franchise, saying that if Fire and Ash underperforms, or for any other reason the next two films don’t end up getting made, he will “hold a press conference” detailing what would’ve been incredible in those two films.
“I don’t know if the saga goes beyond this point. I hope it does,” says Cameron. “But, you know, we prove that business case every time we go out.” Cameron then goes on to explain, saying, “Here’s what it is. If we don’t get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I’ll hold a press conference, and I’ll tell you what we were gonna do. How’s that?”
In that same discussion, Cameron also discussed the possibility of turning the 4th and 5th Avatar movies into novels, rather than feature films. “It might be good to have the canonical record of what it was all supposed to be,” says Cameron, despite also saying there’s “no business model for it anymore.” It must also be clear that Cameron has previously stated that he has always seen a 4th film as a possibility, not a guarantee. “I always say ‘if,’ but will it be profitable enough, and only we will know that, Cameron said previously in an interview for Deadline.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is now playing in theaters.
