James Cameron Confident ‘Avatar 2’ Will Top ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Box Office

It’s been nearly ten years since the release of the James Cameron’s Avatar, with the long-awaited sequel set for release Dec. 17, 2021. Despite the twelve-year gap between the two films, Cameron has revealed to USA Today he’s “confident” Avatar 2 will beat out Avengers: Endgame in becoming the highest grossing film of all time.

Avatar earned a whopping $2.78 billion back in 2009, only to be topped by Endgame‘s $2.79 billion gross in 2019. Cameron has declared the sequel will restore its place, adding he “think[s] it’s a certainty.” He then went on to clarify he’s not intending on stealing the spotlight just yet: “let’s give ‘Endgame’ their moment and let’s celebrate that people are going to the movie theater.”

He addressed the small margin by which Endgame beat Avatar, stating he “didn’t want to sound snarky,” but “they beat us by one quarter of a percent. I did the math in my head while driving in this morning. I think accountants call that a rounding error.” The longtime filmmaker, known for directing now-classics like The Terminator and Titanic, seems fairly confident the decade-long produced Avatar 2 will score enough to beat out the biggest superhero film of all time.

Avatar 2 will not join the franchise alone, with Avatar 3 and 4 set to follow in 2023 and 2025, respectively.
