James Bobin Selected to Direct Adaptation of New Sci-Fi Book at Lionsgate

It is extremely common for a book to be adapted into a film, with many of those adaptations becoming some of the highest grossing film franchises of all time (i.e. Harry Potter, Lord of the RingsThe Hunger Games). A new book titled The Punch Escrow will release on July 25, but there has been a huge bidding war for the film rights that finished up in April, with Lionsgate taking the prize.

Lionsgate has selected James Bobin to direct the new sci-fi film, according to the Hollywood Reporter. He is most known for being the creator of the hit UK television show Flight of the Conchords, and his latest works include Alice Through the Looking Glass and The Muppets. It will be interesting to see which direction he will take the film, whether it will have more of a comedic or serious tone.

The Punch Escrow takes place in the 22nd century, where the future is quite promising — mankind has developed the ability to control aging, teleportation has become the main form of transportation, and pollution has been all but dissipated. The story follows Joel Byram, who is basically a physical and psychological trainer for robots, in an attempt to make them more human. After jumping through a teleporter and accidentally getting cloned, he must attempt to avoid the powerful company in control of the teleportation machines as well as a religious group looking to destroy the teleportation, and attempt to repair his marriage that has fallen apart.

The Punch Escrow currently does not have a release or production start date, but we are extremely excited to see how the development on this film plays out.
