Jake Schreier, director of well-known John Green adaptation Paper Towns, has just boarded one of Marvel’s upcoming titles, Thunderbolts. The film is said to follow a story with villains of the MCU at its center. More specifically, The Thunderbolts: a group of supervillains from the Hulk comics who made their first appearance in 1997.
The team is similar to DC’s Suicide Squad in that this team of bad guys is supervised by government officials, at least in some scenarios. No specific storyline or version of the characters that the film will depict has been announced yet, so all fans can do is speculate based on the comics. But, speculation amongst fans has been ruminating since all the way back in 2019 when it was revealed that Daniel Bruhl would return as Zemo for Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Zemo is one of the original members of the Thunderbolts team in the comics.
The movie is written by Eric Pearson, which is good news for fans, as he is one of the screenwriters behind Thor: Ragnarok and Black Widow. Both of those are major fan favorites among the plethora of films the MCU has under its belt.
No news of casting, production dates, or a premiere estimation has been announced but Disney has confirmed to reveal more information about upcoming Marvel projects at D23 in September.
