Jake Gyllenhaal has confirmed his involvement in noir western film The Sisters Brothers alongside John C Reily and Joaquin Phoenix. The story, based on Patrick deWitt’s 2011 novel, follows two brothers named Eli and Charlie Sisters, who in 1851 Oregon, are hired by their boss to kill a prospector who has stolen from him. The two brothers travel south to San Francisco to complete the deed, but on the way are distracted by the prospect of gold.
Director Jacques Audirad is most well-known for directing Dheepan, which won the Palme d’Or in 2015 at the Cannes Film Festival. The Sisters Brothers will mark his first film shot in English. John C Reilly optioned the film rights to the novel back in 2011. Reilly had previously starred in the 2015 film Les Cowboys, a contemporary western directed by French director/writer Thomas Bidegain, a regular collaborator of Audiard.
Gyllenhaal, who could recently be seen beside Amy Adams in Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals, can next be seen on the big screen beside Ryan Reynolds in Life for Sony, as well as Okja for Netflix, Wildlife directed by Paul Dana, and The Division, an adaptation of the popular video game. Also look for Gyllenhaal on Broadway starting February 11 in the production of Sunday in the Park with George.
