Monster movie nerds might have their dreams come true. It looks like a Godzilla / Pacific Rim crossover is very much a possibility. Both films were made by Legendary Pictures for Warner Bros. There would be no need for a shared rights deal a la Sony and Disney’s Spider-Man deal and it would be a lot easier than Warner Bros working with Universal to remake King Kong vs. Godzilla.
Pacific Rim director Guillermo Del Toro (Crimson Peak) was asked in an interview about the possibility of the worlds colliding.
Hypothetically, I would love the fuck out it. I would love to see jaeger and Godzilla duke it out. That would be too much for the human brain.
The real question about the hypothetical showdown would be who would win the battle. In King Kong vs. Godzilla, RKO Pictures and Toho Company shot two different versions. The American RKO version featured King Kong winning the battle while the Japanese version had Godzilla winning the fight. With both characters being either Japanese or drawing from culture and the greater reliance on foreign markets, that likely wouldn’t play a role here. They might work around their being a winner similar to Batman v. Superman where the robots would fight the King of Monsters in the first act, then team up to fight a greater threat for the climax.
Before we can even think about seeing the earth shattering battle though, both Pacific Rim 2 and the Godzilla sequel will need to do substantially better at the box office than their predecessors. While both made back more than their production budget when taking into account foreign grosses, both greatly under-performed against expectations. Del Toro recently announced that he will start filming Pacific Rim 2 in the fall. No announcements have been made on a Godzilla sequel but an event like this could jumpstart production.
We’ll have more on this possible project as it develops.
