J.K. Simmons, known for his roles in highly-lauded films such as Juno and Whiplash, is reportedly set to continue to reprise what is perhaps his most memorable role, that of stern Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson, in at least two more MCU Spider-Man sequels, per an interview on People TV’s Couch Surfing. In the interview, Simmons notes how “When we signed on for the first movie, we signed a contract to do two sequels, as well,” suggesting that J. Jonah Jameson will continue to appear as an exposing thorn in Spider-Man’s side for the foreseeable future.
Simmons did leave some doubt on the matter, though, clarifying that, with these contracts, “…you’re committed to do it, but they’re not necessarily committed to use your character.” That being said, it seems reasonable to believe that Jameson and the Daily Bugle will play at least a small part in the MCU’s upcoming projects.
In the end credits of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Simmons made quick appearance as Jameson, potentially shining a light on the MCU’s plan for Peter Parker in his next years. This leads the audience to expect that in the next Spider-Man film (rumored to be called Spider-Man: Home Run), we once again get to see the dynamic between Spider-Man and Jameson, who is dead-set on uncovering him and helps deliver the news of Spidey’s identity at the end of Far From Home. It will be interesting to see how their traditional relationship changes, though, as Jameson, along with the rest of the world, now knows the true identity of Spider-Man.
Simmons played Jameson in Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy, where he astounded with his loud-mouthed bossing around of Peter Parker and notable salt-and-pepper hairstyle. He also voiced him in 2007’s Spider-Man 3 video game.
The new Spider-Man film was initially set to be released on July 16, 2021, but was pushed back until November 5, 2021 due to production disruptions caused by the pandemic, per Variety.
