For his fourth feature film director J.C. Chandor (Margin Call, All is Lost) is circling another disaster story. This time, instead of a financial collapse or survival tale, he his honing in on an oil spill.
In 2010 the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded killing 11 people and injuring 16 others. The rig sunk, while leaking an estimated 4.9 million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The leak began on April 20 and was capped on July 15. The film will reportedly focus on the heroism of those who fought the fire and contained the spill, as well as the cause of the spill and consequences thereafter.
Deepwater Horizon would be a fitting project for Chandor, who proved himself more than capable with his latest open sea film All is Lost. Chandor also displayed his ability to construct an interesting and though-provoking take on current events in Margin Call, his first feature which explored the circumstances surrounding the 2008 financial collapse. His next film, A Most Violent Year, is due out this fall and will focus on an immigrant and his family struggling to maintain their way of life in the midst of the hardships of the New York City winter of 1981.
