Jim Mickle’s upcoming thriller, Cold in July has its first official U.S. trailer out. Based on a novel by Joe R. Lansdale, it tells the story of a simple family man who, after killing an intruder in his home, finds himself being stalked by the intruders fresh from prison father, out for revenge.
Last May, it was reported that Michael C. Hall (TV’s Dexter) had landed the lead role. Other cast members include Don Johnson (TV’s Miami Vice) and Sam Shepard (August: Osage County, Out of the Furnace).
A relatively new independent director, Mickle has become known for treading familiar cinematic waters, handling subjects like vampires (Stake Land) and cannibalism (We Are What We Are) with surprisingly favorable (and critically acclaimed) results. Hopefully, he’ll be doing the same with revenge thrillers.
Lansdale has long been the recipient of critical acclaim. An author of short stories, books, and scripts, Landsdale is known for his abundance of creativity and strangeness. He’s written for the animated versions of Batman and Superman in the 90’s – including an episode that involved giant farm animals and a talking goat. In 2002 his novella about an elderly Elvis and a black John F. Kennedy fighting a Mummy, Bubba Ho-Tep was adapted into a film by Phantasm director, Don Coscarelli.
Cold in July premiered in January at Sundance; it’s set for a wider release in May.
