As the COVID-19 pandemic rages on and cases numbers across the globe continue to rise, the Italian government has decided to take action. In response to the country’s increasing case numbers, Italy’s government has implemented some new regulations. According to Comic Book Resources Italy has issued curfew on restaurants and bars, and Italy has forced game halls, live theaters, dance halls, and movie theaters to close during the pandemic. It was reported earlier this month that the American movie theater chain AMC is struggling because of the pandemic, so it could be safe to assume that Italy’s movie theaters will be negatively impacted.
Deadline reports that the shutdown began on Monday the 26th. On the Saturday before the closure began, Italy experienced a record number of about 19,644 COVID-19 cases, and at least 151 people died because of the virus on that day.
Other countries in Europe like Spain and France have implemented curfews as well, but they have not closed businesses like movie theaters. However it is speculated that the curfews could effect movie theater business in these countries.
At this time it unknown when Italy will allow its movie theaters to reopen. Hopefully these regulations will protect people from the virus and reduce its spread, and hopefully these shutdowns won’t harm Italy’s movie industry.
