Although the New Line/Warner Bros. horror flick is now predicted to get $10M less than the $110M initially anticipated, It: Chapter Two has still hit horror film records during its international box office opening weekend. In several markets, it managed to be Warner Bros’ biggest opening this year and became the best horror opening ever, beating the first It, in Italy and Russia. According to Deadline, Chapter Two has now reached $39M at the box office.
It: Chapter Two follows the Losers’ Club 27 years after the events of It, with new actors playing the adult versions of the 1986 Stephen King novel characters. The new actors include James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, and SNL alum Bill Hader. Bill Skarsgard also reprises his role as the villainous clown Pennywise, who returns to the town of Derry, Maine, to terrorize its people. The original actors of the first film are also featured in flashbacks and include Sophia Lillis, Jaeden Martell, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Finn Wolfhard, Chosen Jacobs, and Jack Dylan Grazer. Andy Muschietti returned to direct the second film from a screenplay written by Annabelle Comes Home writer and director Gary Dauberman.
It remains one of the most successful horror films with a worldwide box office gross of $700 million. Though the sequel doesn’t seem to be reaching the box office number initially predicted, there is no contesting that it will make a huge impact on the horror film expectations of the future, just like its predecessor.
