Question of the day: Is Dave Bautista joining the cast of the still-untitled Blade Runner 2 sequel? He appeared to tease something on social media today, hinting that may be the cards. In recent years, Bautista has certainly made his mark in a number of high-profile franchises including memorable appearances in both Guardians of the Galaxy and Spectre, so what’s going on?
Sicario director Denis Villeneuve will direct the upcoming film – a sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 immortal science fiction classic – with original star Harrison Ford reprising his role as Rick Deckard. Ryan Gosling (The Big Short) will also star as will Robin Wright (House of Cards) in an undisclosed role. Original scribe Hampton Fancher wrote the script along with Michael Green which picks up the events several decades after the first film. Cinematographer Roger Deakins has also signed on the film.
Bautista’s appearance, well that will have to remain a mystery for now. He took to Twitter to say “I can’t wait to share some really exciting news” along with a picture of himself holding an origami unicorn. That touch is a nod the first Blade Runner movie as Rick famously found a similar object in its finale, sparking a cinematic debate for the ages in whether or not Rick Deckard was a human or a replicant. In the meantime, Bautista will next be seen on screen in The Boss, the latest Melissa McCarthy comedy set to arrive in theaters on April 8th. He is also reprising the role of Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 which is currently filming.
The second chapter in the Blade Runner chronicle is expected to start shooting this summer with a release date planned for January 12, 2018. We shall stay tuned.
