Despite a lackluster opening last week, the newest entry of the Indiana Jones franchise has uncovered nearly $11 million on Monday, which will hopefully add a significant boon to the film’s earnings. Reportedly, the film cost more than $300 million to make, meaning that Indy needs to catch up with the rest of the box office and earn enough to at least break even.

When it first opened last Friday, many people expected the finale of the franchise to draw in a larger crowd and compensate for its hefty budget. When it only earned about $60 million by the weekend’s end, many people were shocked and worried about this turn of events. Some speculated that the film didn’t draw a big enough crowd from the younger audience (Disney calculated 42% under-35 audience members) while others brought up the lackluster reviews from the Cannes Film Festival. They were also shocked to note that the mildly maligned Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull managed to beat its successor globally at $272.1 million. Either way, they feared these earnings could spell doom for a franchise and risk it fading into obscurity instead of the big bang they desired.

Even so, this does not spell total doom for Indiana Jones, seeing as the earnings from Monday managed to help lift it to about $71 million at the box office, beating both Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse and Elemental. While both were champions at the box office, the fact that Indy could whip his way to the top of the weekend is still impressive. If this trend continues, then the film can help earn back all that it had spent on making the grand finale for this famous adventurer.
