The IMAX Corporation and Broad Green Pictures are joining Sophisticated Films and Wild Bunch to round out the funding of Terrence Malick’s long-awaited epic documentary, Voyage of Time, according to a press release. The film is the first of ten to be financed by IMAX’s Original Film Fund – devoted to innovative documentary storytelling. Over thirty years in the making, Voyage of Time is Malick’s ambitious (to say the least) project portraying the history of the universe from its origins to its final collapse. There will actually be two versions of the film: a 40-minute IMAX version narrated by Brad Pitt and a feature-length 35-mm version narrated by Cate Blanchett.
Often billed as a companion film to The Tree of Life (2011), which used the creation of the universe as the symbolic framework of a domestic drama, Voyage of Time looks to be even wider in scope and likely even more abstract. Though the subject matter of Malick’s other upcoming film, Knight of Cups (which deals with a screenwriter haunted by Hollywood decadence and his own destructive tendencies) may not seem as grandiose, its trailer suggests it will be no less enigmatic and philosophical. Malick’s films have always touched on the profound spiritual and emotional connections people can make with each other, so it will be interesting to see what sort of narrative he creates with Voyage of Time, which does not appear to feature any humans whatsoever.
