IFC Midnight Acquires Rights to ‘District 9’ Director Neill Blomkamp’s Horror Feature ‘Demonic’

Neill Blomkamp is making progress with his next feature film. The District 9 writer and director ‘s upcoming project titled Demonic has been acquired by IFC Midnight.

Demonic is a supernatural horror- thriller film about a young woman that unleashes terrifying demons from a decades old family riff. The film seems to be in line with the modern horror family dynamics of Ari Aster, though with a Neill Blomkamp twist.

The largely sci-fi director will be making his fourth feature film after taking six years off big budgeted feature films. Blomkamp has made a ton of shorts and also a TV mini-series. However, while he is back to the feature film directing chair, he will be making a horror-thriller opposed to his traditional sci-fi films such as District 9, Elysium, and Chappie.

The president of IFC Films, Arianna Bocco, had this to say about the filmmaker, “It’s exciting to work together on this highly anticipated new vision, and be immersed in yet another world terrifyingly similar to our own.”

It is clear that this is a unique step for the filmmaker and it is exciting to see him challenge his already successful career. When a director challenges himself to be different, it is always a success. This union between Blomkamp and IFC seems like a good fit for a new stage of his career.

The 41 year-old South-African director has plenty more to add to the cinema stratosphere.

Demonic is set for a August 20, 2021 release date.
